Such cynicism is why he can be no more be trusted than mainstream politicians which I think will lead to a backlash sooner than later as little enrages voters more than phony politicians masquerading as "authentic". It perhaps will be sooner as he can no longer expect the free pass of the eccentric outsider with no prospect of power as he enjoyed a few weeks ago. He is now part of the establishment.

Expect opposition parties to focus rather more on any signs of inconsistencies and hypocrisies by Labour than trying to highlight comments he made in the 1980s. The young are disproportionately against Brexit and in the longer run those who have opposed it consistently on principle may well reap electoral rewards. Labour's current approach to Brexit is a sham and deserves to be exposed as one.
